RXF 20 results: Rico Verhoeven makes successful MMA debut, defeats Viktor Bogutzki via technical knockout
Rico Verhoeven\’s mixed martial arts (MMA) debut was successful … and quick.
The GLORY Heavyweight champion earned a first-round technical knockout victory over Viktor Bogutzki on Monday (Oct.19, 2015) in the main event at RXF 20, inside Transilvania Arena in Sibiu, Romania.
Verhoeven, 26, shared a few good exchanges with his German counterpart in the beginning of the fight. He landed a few inside low kicks and also got tagged a few times by his winless (0-2) opponent. Bogutzki moved in on him shortly after, but the Dutch kickboxer secured a body lock and landed a back trip to score a takedown.
From there, it was only a matter of time.
Verhoeven moved from half guard into full mount and proceeded to tee off with big punches, for which Bogutzki had no answer. Referee Herb Dean stepped in to call it a day soon after.
The official time came at 2:11 of the opening round.
While this is far from a coming out party – as this was his first MMA fight and Bogutzki is remarkably unproven – Verhoeven\’s debut was a promising one. He will need to make some adjustments with his defense, which is likely because of getting used to the difference between 10-ounce kickboxing gloves and four-ounce MMA gloves. And as far as grappling goes, Verhoeven showed he isn\’t lost off of his feet, scored a nice takedown and also transitioned very nicely into mount before finishing the fight.
That\’s an encouraging sign for a career kickboxer in his first MMA bout. We will learn more on exactly how good he is as his competition gets stiffer.
